McMinn Book Review Michelle Meyer Liberty University McMinn Book Review Summary Christian counselors have a responsibility to their clients to integrate psychology and theology in their therapeutic approaches. Incorporating multiple components however is not as straight forward as one might think. In Psychology Theology, and Spirituality (McMinn, 2011) McMinn discusses the benefits of an integrated counseling approach that strives to promote ââ¬Å"both spiritual and emotional growthâ⬠(McMinn, 2011, p. 5) by including a third element; spirituality, or more specifically, spiritual formation. Finding the proper blend of elements can be challenging even for a seasoned therapist. McMinn outlines common challenges in each chapter, and offers thoughts on how to blend psychology, theology, and spirituality in the specific setting of the counseling relationship; a relationship that ideally demonstrates how relationship with God our redeemer can bring transformational change in the counselee. As he does in the second section of his book, McMinn begins by outlining how even the counseling relationship itself will present its own set of challenges. Two challenges faced by counselors include training in spiritual formation, something that comes solely through deepening their own relationship with God, and establishing boundaries between their personal and professional life while still drawing upon personal experience in the counseling sessions.
